Real HUB Stories: Fear Almost Kept Her From Becoming a Homeowner

Published on: March 2, 2026

Sometimes the scariest part of buying a home isn’t the money. It’s the fear in your head.

Buying your first home can feel impossible. Especially when no one in your family has done it before. But what happens when you finally take that first step? One teacher’s story shows us exactly what can happen when you push past your fears.

Two Years of Being Too Scared to Try

For almost two years, this teacher wanted to buy a home but was too afraid to even start. Here’s what they shared with us: “In February, I officially started on my journey to homeownership. The truth is, that journey began long before I ever filled out a form or spoke to a lender. For nearly two years, fear held me back. Fear of rejection; fear that I wasn’t ready; fear that I didn’t deserve it; and I know I’m not alone.”

Sound familiar? You’re not alone in feeling this way. “I could be wrong, but I feel like for many black people, homeownership has felt out of reach. Generational barriers, systemic inequities, and a lack of inherited wealth have made owning a home feel more like a dream than a realistic goal. When something is not modeled for us, it becomes difficult to envision it for ourselves. And when your mindset is shaped by fear and scarcity, it controls your every move, even the ones you don’t make.”

When you’ve never seen it done in your family, it’s hard to believe it’s possible for you.

Finding Help Made for Teachers

Then this teacher learned about special programs for people like them: “When I heard about the Georgia Dream’s down payment assistance program and the additional support for educators, it sounded promising. Still, the first step required taking a first time homebuyers class, and even that felt daunting. What if I learned I wasn’t ready? What if I confirmed my fears were right?”

Even free help felt scary. What if they learned bad news?

The Class That Changed Everything

But they took the class anyway: “Despite my anxiety, I enrolled in a class offered by the Urban League through Operation HOPE, and it changed everything. It was informative, empowering, and surprisingly encouraging. I filled notebook pages with information and read them over and over.”

That one class made all the difference. Instead of scary news, they got helpful information and hope.

More Waiting, More Worrying

Even after the good class, fear wasn’t done yet: “The next step, meeting one on one with a housing counselor, was the next hurdle. I procrastinated for a month, haunted by ‘what ifs.’ What if I didn’t make enough? What if my debt was too high? What if the hole I was in was too deep to climb out?”

The Meeting That Surprised Them

Finally, they met with Tony, a housing counselor:

“Eventually, I pushed myself to meet with Tony, a housing counselor who reviewed my finances and calmly walked me through my reality. To my surprise, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. We outlined a plan and ended the meeting with no pressure, just possibility.”

Their money situation wasn’t nearly as bad as they thought!

The Phone Call That Started It All

Then came the surprise: “Then came the unexpected call: Tony told me I could move forward right now, if I was ready. My mouth said ‘yes,’ but inside, I was screaming. Fear reared its head once again. It took me another month to follow up with lenders. But once I did, once I allowed myself to step into the process fully, everything began to move.”

Even good news was scary. But once they started, things moved fast.

From Start to Finish in Just 4 Months

Here’s the amazing timeline: “On May 10th, I began the official search with a realtor. Fifty two days later, I closed on my first home. Just four months from the time I took the class to the time I held the keys in my hand.”

Four months. From class to keys.

The Big Lesson

Looking back, this teacher learned something important: “As I reflect on this life changing experience, one truth stands above the rest: the biggest obstacle was me. Not my finances, not my credit, not the housing market… Me! My own fear was louder than the facts.”

“What I found instead were knowledgeable, patient professionals who believed in my dream as much as I did. I wasn’t alone. I was supported. And I was capable all along.”

The people helping weren’t mean or judgmental. They were helpful and supportive.

What This Teacher Wants You to Know

Their advice for anyone feeling scared: “So if you’re like I was, waiting, worrying, wondering, just do it! Take the class… Make the call… Ask the questions… You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain. Homeownership isn’t just a dream. It’s right! And it’s worth it.”

The Biggest Enemy…

This teacher’s biggest enemy wasn’t money problems or bad credit. It was fear. For two years, fear kept them from even trying. But once they took that first step, just signing up for a class, everything changed. In four months, they went from too scared to try to holding the keys to their own home. The help is out there. The programs exist. The people want to help you succeed. Your fear might be loud, but the facts are simple: you can do this, too.
